I liked the opportunity to meet entrepreneurs and company leaders who have developed innovative solutions. 2024 Speakers Xavier Becerra Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra is the 25th secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the first Latino to hold the office. Secretary Becerra served 12 terms in Congress as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, where he was one of the original co-sponsors of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). Prior to assuming his cabinet position, Secretary Becerra served as attorney general of the state of California, and he led the three-year federal court fight to save the ACA and, with it, the protections of the 133 million Americans with pre-existing conditions. Secretary Becerra holds a B.A. in economics from Stanford University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School. Andrea Joy Campbell Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Attorney General Campbell’s biography will be posted shortly. Noubar Afeyan, Ph.D. Founder and CEO, Flagship Pioneering Co-Founder and Chairman, Moderna Noubar Afeyan is founder and CEO of Flagship Pioneering, a company that creates bioplatform companies to transform human health and sustainability. An entrepreneur and biochemical engineer, Afeyan has co-founded more than 70 life science and technology startups. He entered biotechnology during its emergence as an academic field and industry, completing his doctoral work in biochemical engineering at MIT in 1987. He was a lecturer at MIT’s Sloan School of Management from 2000 to 2016 and at Harvard Business School until 2020. In 2022, Afeyan was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. A passionate advocate of the contributions of immigrants to economic and scientific progress, he is the co-founder of the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity and a number of other philanthropic projects. Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D. President and CEO Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Selwyn Vickers, who became president and CEO of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2022, is an internationally recognized pancreatic cancer surgeon and researcher and a pioneer in health disparities research. In 2013, Vickers became senior vice president of medicine and dean of the medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), one of the largest public academic medical centers in the United States. He later also assumed the roles of CEO of the $5.8 billion, 11-hospital UAB Health System, anchored by the eighth largest hospital in the U.S. Vickers earned baccalaureate and medical degrees and completed his surgical training at the Johns Hopkins University. He completed two postgraduate research fellowships with the National Institutes of Health and international surgical training at John Radcliffe Hospital of Oxford University. Samarth Kulkarni, Ph.D. Chairman and CEO Crispr Therapeutics Samarth Kulkarni has served as the CEO of Crispr Therapeutics since 2017. Prior to joining Crispr in the early stages of the company as chief business officer, Kulkarni was a partner at McKinseyCo., where he co-led the biotech practice and led initiatives in areas including personalized medicine and immunotherapy. He currently serves on the boards Centessa Pharmaceuticals, Black Diamond Therapeutics and Repare Therapeutics. Previously, he served as the chairman of Casebia Therapeutics, a joint subsidiary formed by Crispr Therapeutics and Bayer. Kulkarni holds a Ph.D. in bioengineering and nanotechnology from the University of Washington, where he conducted research on the delivery of biological drugs and in the field of molecular diagnostics. He received a bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology. Kathryn E. Giusti Founder Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation Kathy Giusti is a two-time cancer survivor, business leader and healthcare disrupter. Named as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People and to Fortune’s list of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders, Giusti is recognized as a pioneer in precision medicine. She founded the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, co-chaired the Harvard Business School Kraft Precision Medicine Accelerator, and has worked with U.S. presidents to fight and cure cancer. Her book Fatal to Fearless: 12 Steps to Beating Cancer in a Broken Medical System” will be published by HarperCollins in February, 2024. Sree Chaguturu, M.D. EVP and Chief Medical Officer CVS Health Sree Chaguturu is executive vice president and chief medical officer of CVS Health. He leads the CVS Health medical affairs organization spanning Aetna, CVS Caremark, CVS Pharmacy, MinuteClinic, women’s health and genomics, data and analytics, patient safety and health equity. Before joining CVS Health, Chaguturu was chief population health officer of Mass General Brigham, the largest health care system in Massachusetts. Chaguturu earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and his M.D. from Brown University. He completed his internal medicine and primary care training at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he is a practicing internal medicine physician. Stephen Gillett CEO Verily Stephen Gillett is the CEO at Verily, where he leads multi-disciplinary health, technology and business teams to advance the company’s precision health purpose. Before his appointment, he was Verily’s president and COO. Prior to joining Verily, Gillett was co-founder and CEO of Chronicle, an Alphabet cybersecurity company that is now part of Google Cloud.
